PEARL Parrot Rescue is an all-volunteer and foster-based organization located in Pittsburgh, PA. LARRY AND BABY ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! Both of them really like wooden toys that they can shred. Along with the cage, the birds will need a variety of perching and toys to keep them busy. The adoption fee is $600 with the adopter providing a cage that meets at least the minimum 64"x32" requirement. LARRY AND BABY ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION PEARL Parrot Rescue is an all-volunteer. Though their current housing is our prefered cage size, they could live in a 64"x32" divided cage. The adoption fee is 600 with the adopter providing a cage that meets at least the minimum 64'x32' requirement. At their foster home, they live happily in a large 80" x 40" cage with a divider and enjoy separate out of cage time. Larry and Baby are a bonded pair with a twist they must be adopted together however they prefer to live in separate, but close, cages. It is normal for parrots to call out to their flock mates first thing in the morning and at the end of the day. Keep in mind that in general, cockatoos can be loud, and their vocalizations mainly occur in the morning and evening. Loves: Almonds, dancing, getting all of the attentionĭislikes: Veggies (but his foster mom is working on it) Likes: Flying, stepping up, giving nose boops, head scratches, and his new diet of: pellets, fresh fruits, and a small number of nuts and seeds given as treats. Larry is active, smart, and full of personality! He is the shyer of the two birds, taking a little longer to warm up, but once he knows you, he is extremely affectionate and loves to dance. He and his friend Baby came to the rescue from a much loved home after his owner grew older and could no longer provide the attention he deserved. Holding the tools could also help the birds recognize their functional properties and whether these features would help with the task at hand.Meet Larry! He's a beautiful, sweet and loving Goffin's Cockatoo believed to be roughly 30 years old. Moving between the two choices could help with the thought process when mulling over the best decision. Osuna-Mascaró’s team suggests several explanations. This behavior was also seen in the first experiment, but it increased significantly in the second.Ĭockatoos who engaged in switching behavior were more likely to do better in selecting the correct tool option for the box they were in. When the parrots had to choose between the two objects, the study authors noticed a pattern where they would pick up one tool, release it, and then pick up the second tool before releasing it as well. One reason for the birds’ high performance is because of their switching behavior between the tools, observes Osuna-Mascaró. They found that cockatoos gradually learned and got better at choosing the correct instrument in every passing session. The team kept track of which tool the birds wielded first and when they used it correctly. More recently, animal biologists have discovered that these birds can learn to create complex and multipurpose tool sets. For example, Goffin’s cockatoos know whether an object is heavy or light just by looking at it. Captive and wild individuals show similar problem-solving behaviors and can assess a situation through different means. These small white parrots are capable of delayed gratification, resisting the temptation of snacking if they know they’ll get a better reward for waiting. Goffin’s cockatoos have caught the eye of animal biologists for some time. “They can learn how to use tools by themselves, innovate the tool sets, and transport what they need from them.” The findings cement Goffin’s cockatoos as one of the smartest creatures on Earth. “They are super flexible,” says Antonio Osuna-Mascaró, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in Austria and lead author of the research study. A new study published today in the journal Current Biology found that Goffin’s cockatoos, a bird native to Indonesia, carry multiple tools and customize their kits to whatever complex problem they are facing.
